Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters
A recent study reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such medications must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the medication describe a intense return of hunger.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural changes.
